Bridging the Gap

Short on time? Here are this article’s key takeaways…

First, the Foundation. Precast concrete abutment and 45°/90° corner blocks are available for crossings up to 75 ft (22.8 m).

Make an Immediate Impact. Pair Velpont substructure components with engineered steel girders or trusses to build open-bottom bridges immediately.

Built for Efficiency. Modular, interlocking blocks reduce excavation, limit in-stream work, and simplify installation.

What’s Coming Soon. Fully integrated precast edge beams, slab beams, and transition curb blocks are expected in late 2026 or early 2027.

As designed, Velpont is a modular bridge system for road crossings up to 75 ft (22.8 m). While the complete integrated package is still in development, core structural components are available today and already being used to deliver durable, efficient, and cost-effective bridge projects.

Here’s what that means for your next crossing project.

Available Now: Precast Concrete Abutment and Corner Blocks

At the core of every Velpont project are architectural-grade wet cast concrete abutment and corner blocks engineered specifically for crossing applications. Both abutment and corner blocks feature interlocking knob-and-groove geometry for secure alignment and hollow core design to reduce shipped weight and allow for on-site reinforcement with rebar and cast-in-place concrete.

These components are available now and include:

  • 4-, 8-, 12-, and 16-ft (1.2, 2.4, 3.6, and 4.8 m) abutment blocks in bottom, middle, and flat-top configurations
  • 45° and 90° corner blocks for wing wall transitions

These machine-placed precast units are manufactured to structural-grade mix requirements with defined dimensional tolerances and reinforcement standards. They form a stable, modular substructure that simplifies installation and accommodates challenging site conditions, including shallow ledge and variable soils.

How You Can Use Velpont Today

While the designs of Velpont’s proprietary precast superstructure components are being finalized, the available abutment and corner blocks can be paired with engineered steel girders or trusses to create complete open-bottom bridge crossings today.

The Velpont substructure was developed first to ensure that engineers, contractors, and project owners receive maximum value from the system. The abutment and corner blocks simplify the most challenging phase of crossing construction – working efficiently and effectively around sensitive ecological spaces and within tight project schedules. The availability of Velpont abutment and corner blocks has already allowed project teams to:

  • Preserve the natural streambed with an open-bottom crossing configuration
  • Reduce in-stream work and excavation depth
  • Install quickly and efficiently using modular precast components
  • Maintain flexibility in superstructure design

You don’t need to wait for the availability of superstructure components to leverage the value of Velpont. Impactful bridge projects are already being built using Velpont substructure components combined with steel superstructures designed to meet site-specific loading and span requirements.

In Development: the Complete Velpont Bridge System

Superstructure components, including precast concrete edge beams, slab beams, and transition curb blocks, are currently in development. These integrated components are expected to be available in late 2026 or early 2027.

Once the remaining elements are finalized, the complete Velpont bridge package will provide a unified modular bridge solution featuring fully integrated substructure and superstructure components. Until then, Velpont abutments and corner blocks offer a proven foundation for open-bottom bridge construction.

Velpont: A Modular System Built to Grow

Velpont was engineered with long-term system integration in mind. Today, substructure components allow engineers, contractors, and property owners to build resilient, open-bottom crossings using steel superstructures. In the near future, the expanded product line will further streamline procurement, design coordination, and installation.

If you’re planning a road-stream crossing and want to understand how Velpont components can fit your project now or when the full package becomes available, our team is ready to help.
